COMMITTEE

GeogSoc is led by a dedicated, hard-working team of students who are elected annually. Check out our bios below to meet the 2020-21 Committee, and don't be afraid to say hello if you see us around!

YOUR 2020-21  COMMITTEE

BEN YUEN

President

Hey, I'm Ben and I'm the GeogSoc president for 2020/21! I'm a 1st year geographer at St Hilda's College, and as president I work to oversee the events and management of the society (although I am lucky to have an incredibly hard working committee alongside me!). Aside from geography, I try to play as much sport as possible in Oxford and back home in Bristol, including cricket, football and tennis.

JAMES GORDON

Treasurer

I’m James, a first year Geographer at St Catz. I’m Treasurer of GeogSoc, which puts me with the responsibility of ensuring that our accounts are kept up to date regularly and that we budget properly throughout the year for our different events. Alongside my interest in Geography, I’m a keen aviation-enthusiast, currently training for my Private Pilots License, and enjoy sports such as Athletics and Mountain Biking.

JOE EDGINGTON-POLLARD

Access Officer

Hey, I'm Joe and I'm a first year Geographer at Worcester. As Access Officer, it is my job to encourage the department to do more in its efforts to improve access and outreach (with the help of our JCC representatives) as well as keeping the Alternative Prospectus updated and responding to students directly. When not staring intently at maps, I enjoy dancing and playing badminton (albeit badly).

RUBY FURNISS

Events Officer

Hi! I'm Ruby, and a first year Geographer from Mansfield. Alongside Ellie, I am an events officer and together we have plans to make GeogSoc members Oxford's A-listers. When I'm not being told that I'm posh, but dim, I'm usually coming last in a pub quiz... so maybe Danny Dorling's not far off...

LOUIS HUDSON

Secretary

I'm Louis, a first-year Geographer at Hertford and the GeogSoc Secretary. I'm responsible for taking minutes at meetings, organising memberships and helping the society run as smoothly as possible. Outside of geography, I enjoy playing college football, rugby and tennis.

SULI SCATCHARD

IT & Marketing Officer

Hiya! I'm Suli - a first year at Christ Church and my role includes publicising our events, managing all our social media accounts (forever living in the fear of getting my personal and GeogSoc posts mixed up) and updating this website! When not pretending to be an influencer, you may find me on exercise with the Oxford Army Officer Training Corps or we may go head-to-head in college netball, hockey and football. Trust and believe, I won't go easy. Grr.

ELLIE CASSIDY

Events Officer

Hi! I'm Ellie, a first year Geographer at Teddy Hall. I'm one of the Events Officers which means I'll be spending time organising super fun social events for GeogSoc members including our regular Colouring and Cocktails and some more special events. Outside of uni, you can ask me anything about singing, musical theatre, chanting about how much I love Liverpool FC or how to make the best cup of tea of your life. You won't be disappointed.

GEORGIA CHARLES

Speaker Co-ordinator

I'm Georgia, a first year geographer at Worcester. I'm GeogSoc's speaker coordinator and I'll be organising guest lectures and talk events throughout the year. Outside of geography, you'll find me listening to music, playing the piano or going on long walks/runs in green spaces.

2019-20 COMMITTEE

BENEDICT GARDNER

PRESIDENT

I’m Benedict, a 3rd year geographer at St John’s. I’m the President of the Society, overseeing all events, making links with external societies, and trying to help GeogSoc fulfil its purpose as a great society for geographers and non-geographers alike! When not talking, reading or writing about geography, I’m at Raouls Bar, attempting to sample their entire menu (though not all in one night, of course).

LAURA MITCHELL

EVENTS OFFICER

Hi! I am Laura and I’m a second year Catz geographer. I am the Events Officer (social sec) for GeogSoc which means I get to invite guest speakers and organise the Colouring & Cocktails events! When I’m not colouring or cocktail making I like to go on walks and pretend I can play a variety of novelty sports.

JAMIE SCRAGG

SECRETARY

I’m Jamie, a second-year Geographer at St Catz. As Secretary, I’m responsible for taking minutes at meetings, organising memberships and helping the society run as smoothly as possible. Outside of GeogSoc, I run the Lifesaving Society (genuinely a competitive sport!) and help organise an Oxford-based Model UN Conference.

FRANKIE BLASE

ALUMNI & CAREERS OFFICER

I’m Frankie, a second year geographer at Hertford. My role in GeogSoc as the Alumni Officer means that I work to foster networks between current geography students and alumni. When not colouring in maps for my degree, I love playing hockey and netball.

INES GETAZ

TREASURER

I’m Inès, a third year geographer at St John’s. I am the Treasurer of GeogSoc and will make sure that accounts are done properly and I will manage the team’s budget! If you don’t want to talk about geography with me, I’ll happily talk to you about football, singing, Switzerland, taekwondo, festivals or skiing. Hopefully we will have at least one common interest…

JAY BHANDARI

ACCESS OFFICER

I’m Jay, a second year geographer at St Catz. As the Access Officer, I’m tasked with attempting to improve conditions for access to studying geography at Oxford. Amongst other things, this involves developing our Alternative Prospectus, responding to applicants’ queries and coordinating with the department and University on their approach to access. Outside of geography I enjoy playing drums in an indie rock band and acting on stage.

CARINA WILLIAMS

IT & MARKETING OFFICER

Hi! I’m Carina, a second-year geographer at Hertford. As IT & Marketing Officer, my job involves looking after GeogSoc’s online presence (including this website!), and getting the word out about all the things we’re up to. When not behind a laptop, you can usually find me canoeing down a river or planning my next hiking trip.
